The practice of ijon trading among mango farmers in Nganjuk Regency remains a widely used informal financing mechanism to meet pre-harvest capital needs. Although it provides quick access to cash, this practice contains elements of gharar (uncertainty) because the transaction object is not clearly determined in terms of quantity, quality, and harvest time, leading to debates within Islamic law perspectives. This study aims to analyze the practice of mango ijon through the approaches of agricultural economics and maqashid shariah in order to assess its impact on farmers’ welfare.
This research employed a descriptive qualitative method by collecting data through in-depth interviews and field observations involving 18 mango farmers and 6 collectors in Rejoso, Ngluyu, and Sumberurip Villages, Nganjuk Regency. Data were analyzed through data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing using a maqashid shariah framework.
The findings reveal that limited access to formal financing, high agricultural risks, and socio-economic dependence on collectors are the main factors sustaining the ijon practice. From an economic perspective, ijon causes farmers to earn lower incomes compared to a cooperative-based salam contract scheme, with an income difference reaching 111%. From the perspective of maqashid shariah, the practice may be tolerated under emergency conditions to sustain farmers’ livelihoods; however, it still has the potential to create injustice and exploitation.
This study offers a novel contribution by integrating agricultural economics and maqashid shariah approaches in analyzing ijon practices contextually. Therefore, strengthening Islamic cooperatives, improving financial literacy, and developing salam contracts are necessary to create a more equitable, certain, and sustainable agricultural transaction system.
