Pengembaraan Dan Penebusan: Analisis Psikologi Tokoh Bahar Safar Dalam Novel Janji Karya Tere Liye

Abstract

This study aims to (1) describe the stages of inner conflict, namely guilt and regret, experienced by the character Bahar Safar in the novel Janji, and (2) explain how Bahar Safar's life journey reflects the psychological process of self-redemption from the perspective of literary psychology. The method used is descriptive qualitative research with a literary psychology approach. The primary data source was the novel Janji by Tere Liye, which was collected through close reading and thought notes. The data was then analyzed using content analysis with psychological interpretation, mainly based on the psychoanalytic theoretical framework (covering the Id, Ego, Superego, and ego defense mechanisms) and Erik Erikson's psychosocial development theory. The findings show that Bahar Safar is a representation of a narrative of redemption. The inner conflict he experiences stems from his dark past, when he was an alcoholic, a troublemaker, and a former convict. This reflects the dominance of the Id and Shadow according to Jung, which leads to prolonged guilt. This guilt serves as the main trigger in the process of redemption. The redemption process itself involves a struggle between the Old Self (destructive habits) and the New Self (integrity and responsibility). The peak of transformation occurs through reparative actions and extraordinary sacrifice, namely serving a prison sentence.
