Abstract

Adaptation is animportant transformation process in adapting literary works into films. According toPamusuk Eneste (1991:60), adaptation is a process of “translation”or transferring a novel into a film that involves various creative changes, such as additions, reductions, and variations to adaptthe story to the characteristics of the visual medium of film. This studyuses a qualitative method that applies comparative analysis in the process ofadaptation (screen adaptation) from literary works to films, and is reinforced by semiotic analysisto interpret the visual and audio meanings that emerge from the adaptation process ofthe novel Rumah Untuk Alie. This studyaims to examine how the novel Rumah Untuk Alie underwent transformation through the process of screen adaptation according to PamusukEneste. This research is important for understanding the phenomenon of narrative andartistic changes in literary adaptations to film, as well as their impact on the interpretationand presentation of stories to audiences. The ekranisasi process of Rumah Untuk Alie is a form of creative reinterpretation thatshifts the focus from psychological/verbal depth (novel) to instant visual/emotional experiences(film). The director engages in a creative dialogue with the source textby reducing excessive verbal elements, adding new visual and technologicalelements, and varying the delivery of emotional meaning to suit thecharacteristics of the film medium, which prioritizes images and sound.
