Abstract

Character formation is one of the main goals of national education. Indonesian, as the national language and the medium of instruction in formal education, holds a strategic position in instilling character values. This study aims to examine the role of Indonesian language learning in shaping the character of students at SMAN 7 Banjarmasin. A descriptive qualitative method with a case study approach was used. Data were collected through classroom observations, interviews with teachers and students, and documentation of teaching materials. The results showed that Indonesian language learning is not only a means of developing language competence but also effective in instilling values such as responsibility, politeness, curiosity, and cooperation. Learning that integrates narrative texts, literary discussions, and writing exercises has proven to stimulate students' moral and social awareness. Therefore, teachers need to design more structured Indonesian language learning strategies to instill these values effectively.
